Course Outline

This CE will consists of three sessions that will include the following topics:

Dental considerations in treating head and neck cancer patients

Lisa Johnson and Paula Yliheikkilä will provide an overview of the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients who develop malignant diseases of the head and neck. Short and long term dental considerations will be discussed as they relate to cancer treatment. Participants will gain an understanding of how they can help to care for this patient population in the Maritimes.

Managing pain and addiction

John Fraser will explain the issues involved in the safe and appropriate use of opioids and cannabis for chronic pain, including the basic concepts of opioid and cannabis addiction and their respective treatments. He will also talk about how to manage acute pain in patients with active addiction and chronic pain.

How does the Chinese medicine handle orofacial pain?

Yang Gu will discuss different alternative and mainstream medical approaches in oral health care. Topics include: basic neurophysiology of orofacial pain, an overview of Chinese medicine, and the way in which Chinese medicine handles orofacial pain.
